About Solar Hot Water
For more product information visit Home Green solar hot water systems.
Hot water is one of the largest consumers of energy within the home. Traditional water heating, via gas or electric, makes up approximately 40% of home energy usage.
A correctly sized solar water system consumes 75%- 80% less purchased energy than traditional gas or electric systems and will reduce carbon emissions by around 3.5 tonnes per year.
In dollar terms, the average family of four people can expect to save between $200 to $700 per year (depending on how heavy their water use is and whether their current system is gas or electric).
With generous state and federal rebates and heavy discounts via the Solar Credits Scheme, solar hot water has never been more affordable!
How solar hot water works
In solar hot water systems, flat plate collectors work on copper pipes running through a glass covered collector. The sun hits the collectors that then convert the solar energy to heat.
With thermosiphon systems, the tank is located on the roof next to the collectors. Water circulates through the solar collectors to the storage tank using the thermosiphon principal that hot water rises naturally.
In split systems, the storage tank is usually located on the ground, separate from the solar collectors. A circulating pump and solar controller are used to ensure correct water circulation.
Solar hot water systems are ‘hybrids’, so you get instantaneous hot water every time. They use an electric or gas booster to provide water heated to a minimum of 60˚C at all times of the day or night. A tempering valve on the booster ensures that hot water is delivered to the home at the required heat.
When operating together, customers can expect their water to be heated utilizing;
- 75% – 80% Solar Energy
- 20% – 25% Purchased Energy (Gas / Electricity)
